Timing and frost dates

Every planting date on the site is worked out from average frost dates for a USDA zone or a region, or from the dates you type in. Averages hide a lot: a late cold snap, a hot spring or a frost pocket in your yard can move the right date by weeks. Your county extension office can give you local frost dates and planting advice for your area.

Results vary

Days to harvest, yields and difficulty ratings describe typical home gardens. Your soil, water, weather, pests and seed variety all change the outcome. We never promise a harvest.

Pet safety

Pet labels summarize the ASPCA plant lists and similar sources. They do not cover every animal, every variety or every part of a plant. If a pet eats a plant and seems unwell, ask your vet or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Food safety

Wash what you pick, and learn which parts of a plant are edible before you eat them. Some crops have leaves or green parts that should not be eaten. When in doubt, leave it out.
