My plot

About

I’m Wes Harlan. I write the crop pages on SproutRow.com and I keep the site running.

My garden is one 4×8 raised bed, a strip along the fence and a balcony that gets sun from about ten until four. I have two kids who will eat a cherry tomato straight off the vine and refuse the same tomato on a plate. I started growing food to change that. It mostly worked.

I also failed a lot. I planted cilantro in June and watched it bolt in a week. I put zucchini next to the hose reel and lost the hose reel. I started tomato seeds in February because the packet said “early” and ended up with leggy seedlings that flopped over by April. Each time I wrote down what went wrong. SproutRow is that notebook, cleaned up.

What you will find here

Every crop page covers sun, spacing, the pot size that works, days to harvest, a planting timeline for your zone, pests, pet safety and the one thing most likely to go wrong. The Plot Planner sorts every crop for your space, sun and zone. There is also a planting calendar, a companion checker and a plot page you can print.

Where the facts come from

Numbers like spacing, days to harvest and planting weeks come from university extension services, the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the RHS and similar sources. Pet safety comes from the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plant lists. Each crop page links the sources used. When sources give different numbers, the page shows a range.

What I am not

I am not a horticulturist, an agronomist or a chef, and I do not have a degree in any of it. I am a home gardener who reads extension bulletins on the couch. Your soil, your weather and your pests are your own, so the best local advice still comes from your county extension office. Nothing here promises a harvest. Some years the squash bugs win.
